You remember the sticky name tags that you put on your shirt to identify who you are to some that might not know you. Recently, I went to my 10 year high school reunion (yes, I'm that old) and of course because many of us have change so much we needed name tags. Our of my friend's husband was enjoying the ample supply. Ever so often he would go and change his. He came back with "Dwight Schrute" or the always popular "Aaron's hero." Of course, we all know that name tags and labels are meant to clarify, but too often that can lead to even more confusion. If someone didn't watch The Office and hadn't met my friend's husband, they might have thought his name was Dwight. As funny as that would be, it would be the wrong information.
All too often our labels are just as confusing and succeed in only muddying up the waters even more. In one of those posts I wish I had written, Michael Spencer lays out the point that while we think it's everyone else that confusing, sometimes our own labels aren't quite the clarifying agent we thought they were.
And no, I'm not throwing out some caveat as to what I agree with or disagree with in Spencer's lists of Christian sub-groups. As I said before, I'm done with those. I'm my own little person with my own beliefs. If you want to know what I believe, just ask me. I can provide you with a confusing label straight from my own mouth. I don't need someone else's.
